Govt to distribute first batch of 129 vehicles to MMDCEs in 12 regions
The government of Ghana has commenced the distribution of vehicles to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) as part of efforts to strengthen local governance, improve administrative efficiency and enhance the monitoring of development projects across the country.
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs announced the distribution of the first batch of 129 vehicles to support the work of local government officials in their respective assemblies.
In a letter dated October 18, 2026, the Ministry directed the affected MMDCEs to report with their drivers from Tuesday, October 20, to collect their assigned vehicles at the Ministry’s premises in Accra.
The first phase covers the Upper East, Upper West, Northern, North East, Savannah, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Volta, Oti and Western North regions, as well as nine selected districts in the Central Region.
The initiative is intended to address transportation challenges confronting local government officials and enable them to perform their administrative responsibilities more effectively.
The vehicles are expected to improve the ability of MMDCEs to visit communities, inspect ongoing development projects, monitor the implementation of government programmes and respond promptly to the needs of residents.
The distribution also forms part of the government’s broader commitment to strengthening decentralisation by equipping district assemblies with the logistics required to deliver essential public services.
Regional ministers in the affected areas were instructed to notify the selected MMDCEs and ensure that the necessary arrangements were made for the collection exercise.
The Ministry also provided contact details for officials requiring further clarification about the distribution process.
The rollout is expected to improve coordination between district assemblies and central government, particularly in rural communities where poor road networks and limited transportation options can make official duties more difficult.
The government is expected to continue the distribution exercise in subsequent phases to ensure that additional assemblies receive the necessary logistical support.
The success of the initiative will depend on the responsible use and maintenance of the vehicles, as well as their effective deployment to support development activities and improve service delivery at the local level.
