Barcelona Rival Handed Four-Match Ban After Clash With Lamine Yamal

According to a report by Barca Universal on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal has received a four-match suspension following his confrontation with Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal during their La Liga meeting last Saturday.

The Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) Disciplinary Committee imposed the punishment after classifying the incident as an assault under its disciplinary regulations.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Bernal was sent off in the 54th minute after an altercation with Yamal, who had intervened during a confrontation involving Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez.

The committee based its decision on the referee’s report and Article 103 of the Disciplinary Code, which addresses assaults that do not result in injury. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea documented the incident, explaining why the Betis midfielder received a straight red card.

His report stated that Bernal grabbed an opponent by the neck and headbutted him twice in quick succession while the ball was out of play. The referee also confirmed that Yamal did not require medical attention and was able to continue playing.

Under Article 103, players responsible for assaults without causing injury can receive suspensions ranging from four to twelve matches. Bernal has therefore been given the minimum punishment permitted under the relevant provision.

The confrontation began shortly after half-time when Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles attempted to help Fermin Lopez up after the Barcelona midfielder fell to the ground. Yamal stepped in to support his teammate, leading to an exchange with Bernal.

The Betis midfielder subsequently grabbed the Barcelona winger before the confrontation escalated into two headbutts. The referee immediately dismissed him, forcing Betis to continue the match with ten players.

Barcelona were leading 3-2 when Bernal was sent off, and the numerical advantage helped them strengthen their position. Hansi Flick’s side eventually secured a convincing 5-2 victory.

Eric Garcia scored eight minutes after the dismissal, while Dani Olmo added another goal to extend Barcelona’s advantage. The disciplinary decision now means Bernal will miss Betis’ next four matches as punishment for his actions against Yamal.
