Happening Now; Current Situation in Nirobi Streets as UoN Students Protest Over This

University of Nairobi (UoN) students staged protests along Waiyaki Way on Wednesday afternoon, disrupting traffic as they demanded an immediate end to the ongoing lecturers’ strike.

The students lit bonfires, burnt tyres and barricaded sections of the busy highway with stones, forcing motorists to look for alternative routes as vehicles struggled to pass.

Images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed some of them holding placards, twigs and whistles while chanting slogans to push the government to resolve the dispute.

They said the prolonged strike had badly affected their studies, which pushed them onto the streets to demand a quick solution.

The demonstrations came less than a week after the University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the government.

In a statement on Friday, October 16, UNSA President Ahmed Rashid warned that students would join the protests if the dispute was not resolved within the deadline.

Student leaders accused the government of failing to address lecturers’ grievances and argued that learners should not bear the consequences of a dispute between university staff and the state.

UNSA also raised concerns about students missing lectures and examinations, with some unsure when they will complete their studies.

The nationwide strike began on October 2 after university staff unions said the government had failed to make progress in implementing the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and other unions are demanding the negotiation, signing and full implementation of the agreement, which covers employment terms, salaries and allowances.

UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga has insisted that the agreement must be backed by a clear financial commitment from the government, particularly the National Treasury.

The source does not say whether police were deployed, whether there were any arrests or injuries, or how long the roadblock lasted. It also does not report any response from the government or the university management.
