Pierre Sage could hardly have picked a tougher place to try to get his Crystal Palace side back on track. Four days after a humiliating 5-0 defeat at Brighton, the Eagles travel to Istanbul to face a Beşiktaş side who have won both of their Europa League games and are almost unbeatable at home.

Sunday’s defeat at the Amex was one of the worst afternoons in Palace’s recent history. They conceded three goals in the first 10 minutes, and the final scoreline equalled the club’s heaviest defeat to their M23 rivals in 70 years. Sage admitted afterwards that he felt “only one feeling – shame”, and he apologised to the supporters.

That came just days after a 3-2 defeat at Sage’s former club Lyon on matchday two of the Europa League, where second-half goals from Yeremy Pino and Daichi Kamada weren’t enough to spark a comeback. Palace have now lost three of their last four games in all competitions, they have conceded 17 Premier League goals, the most in the division, and they have let in a goal inside the first 10 minutes in each of their last three matches.

Reports suggest this game and Sunday’s home meeting with Newcastle could be crucial to Sage’s future.

Vincenzo Italiano’s Beşiktaş have made an excellent start in Europe. They have won both of their league-phase games, scoring seven goals, and they sit fourth in the table. Domestic form has been less consistent. They are fifth in the Süper Lig, four points behind leaders Galatasaray following Monday’s 2-0 defeat at Trabzonspor, and they have yet to draw a league game this season, winning five and losing three.

Home form is where they really shine. Beşiktaş have won all four of their home league games so far, scoring 12 goals, and seven of their last eight matches have produced over 2.5 goals.

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.

Beşiktaş will be without captain Orkun Kökçü and winger Milot Rashica, both of whom are injured. Kökçü’s absence is a big blow to Italiano’s midfield.

Former Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović is expected to lead the line, with former Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard on the left and Oh Hyeon-gyu also pushing for a start. Alexander Nübel will start in goal.

For Palace, Ben Chilwell, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Dean Henderson and Chadi Riad are all unavailable. That leaves Sage short of options in defence, with Walter Benítez continuing in goal behind a back three of Jaydee Canvot, Axel Disasi and Chris Richards.

Jean-Philippe Mateta could start after coming off the bench against Brighton.

Besiktas: Nübel; Ouattara, Topçu, Agbadou, Murillo; Özcan, Ndini, Olaitan; Fakılı, Vlahović, Trossard

Crystal Palace: Benítez; Canvot, Disasi, Richards; Khalaili, Wharton, Kamada, Mitchell; Sarr, Pino; Strand Larsen

Sage is in a difficult position. He needs wins in the Premier League – they face Newcastle on Sunday – but can’t afford another heavy defeat in this one.
