Kenyan Woman Who Returned Home After 2 Decades Abroad Heartbroken After Elephant Invaded Her Farm

A Kenyan woman who returned home from abroad with hopes of building her future through farming is now counting huge losses after elephants invaded her farm in Makueni County and destroyed valuable property.

Hannah Masila says the latest invasion has left her devastated, with the damage estimated to run into hundreds of thousands or even millions of shillings.

What was meant to be a rewarding new chapter after years abroad has turned into a painful struggle to protect her family’s livelihood.

According to Masila, the family has relied on the farm as a source of income for decades. However, repeated elephant invasions have become a growing threat, with the latest incident causing destruction on a scale she says they had never experienced before.

“They struck again. This time, they destroyed property worth hundreds of thousands, if not millions of shillings,” she lamented.

The farmer described the experience as heartbreaking, saying it was painful to watch years of hard work and investment destroyed in such a short time.

“Imagine watching 20 years of hard work and investment get reduced to nothing overnight. Honestly, sijui hata niseme nini. It’s heartbreaking,” she shared.

Following the latest incident, Masila said the family reported the destruction to the Kenya Wildlife Service, where they were issued with forms to fill out as part of the reporting process. However, the family is still waiting to see what assistance may follow.

Determined to protect what remains of their investment, the family is now exploring additional ways to keep the elephants away.

Masila revealed that they have installed more lights on the property and are looking for beehives as they consider installing an electric fence.
