Mbalula Honours Gaddafi 15 Years After His Death
ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula has paid tribute to the late Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, marking 15 years since his killing.
In a post on Tuesday evening, Mbalula called Gaddafi âBrother Leaderâ and remembered him for backing anti-colonial and national liberation struggles across Africa. He specifically noted Gaddafiâs support for the fight against apartheid in Southern Africa.
Mbalula shared a quote from the former Libyan leader: âMy vision is to inspire African leaders to unify our continent. If African masses are enlightened, aware and make informed decisions, Africa will thrive. I firmly believe African unity is essential.â
He ended the message with a strong revolutionary call: âLong live the undying revolutionary spirit of Brother Leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, Long live!â
Gaddafi was killed on 20 October 2011 during the uprising that toppled his government. For many in the ANC and other African liberation movements, he remains a figure who backed their struggles with money, training and political support during the hard years of colonial rule and apartheid.
Mbalulaâs words come at a time when debates about African unity and Pan-African ideals continue to feature in South African politics. By recalling Gaddafiâs vision, the ANC SG has once again placed the idea of a stronger, united Africa at the centre of the conversation.
The post quickly drew attention, with some South Africans supporting the tribute while others questioned the full record of Gaddafiâs long rule in Libya.
