I missed my son burial to celebrate my ex husband birthday on the same day – Xandy
According to report by Ghbase on Wednesday 21, 2026, Ghanaian actress and media personality Xandy Kamel has opened up about one of the most painful moments of her life, revealing that she missed the burial of her first son because it coincided with the birthday of her former husband.
The actress made the emotional revelation during an interview with actress and television host Emelia Brobbey, where she spoke about the circumstances surrounding the death of her son and the difficult decisions she made at the time.
According to Xandy, her first son died by drowning at Sakumono Beach after completing his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). She explained that the boy had gone to the beach with some friends when the tragic incident occurred.
Xandy recalled that the date of her ex-husband’s birthday was September 17, which was also the day her son was being buried. “I remember September 17, which was my ex-husband’s birthday. That same day, my first son was being buried,” she recounted.
She disclosed that she was at home when she received news of her son’s death but ultimately decided not to attend the burial. At the time, she said, her attention was largely focused on her relationship with her then-husband and celebrating his birthday.
“I could not go to his burial that day because I was in love with my ex-husband and we were celebrating his birthday. So, it was my mother who went to bury my late son,” she said.
Xandy further clarified that her son’s body was not immediately recovered after the drowning incident. She said certain rituals were performed by the sea as part of efforts to locate the body, and she was present during the process.
According to her account, the body was eventually swept to the shore three days after the incident, bringing a painful end to the search.
The actress also explained why she did not accompany her son’s remains to the burial. She said, according to the customs of her community, her son’s death was regarded as a tragic or unnatural death, referred to in Akan as “Atofo Wuɔ.”
Xandy’s revelation has shed light on the personal grief and difficult circumstances she experienced following the death of her son, while also highlighting the influence of traditional customs on funeral practices in some Ghanaian communities.
