NPP Should Find a Better Candidate and Ask Bawumia to Retire From the Race — Captain Smart
Ghanaian media personality and aspiring National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Gomoa West, Captain Smart, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consider selecting a different presidential candidate and encourage former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to withdraw from the party’s presidential race.
Captain Smart made the call while discussing the NPP’s leadership and its prospects in future presidential elections, arguing that the party should explore alternative candidates instead of continuing with Dr Bawumia as its flagbearer.
According to the media personality, the NPP needs to reconsider its presidential strategy and identify a candidate who could present a stronger alternative to its political opponents.
His remarks have brought renewed attention to the debate over the party’s leadership choices and the direction it should take as it prepares for another national electoral contest.
Dr Bawumia remains a prominent figure within the NPP, having served as Ghana’s Vice President before contesting the 2024 presidential election as the party’s candidate. His political future and role in the party’s next electoral campaign have consequently become important subjects in discussions about the NPP’s leadership.
Captain Smart’s comments suggest that, in his view, the party should be open to a change of candidate if it believes another individual could better advance its electoral ambitions.
The selection of a presidential flagbearer is a significant decision for the NPP, as the candidate is expected to unite party members, communicate its policies and attract support from voters across the country.
However, choosing a replacement would also involve internal party considerations, including the preferences of delegates, the ambitions of other potential candidates and the party’s assessment of its political strategy.
As an aspiring NDC parliamentary candidate for Gomoa West, Captain Smart is himself seeking a role in Ghanaian electoral politics. His intervention adds to the wider political discussion surrounding the NPP’s leadership and its preparations for future elections.
His call does not, by itself, establish whether the NPP will reconsider Dr Bawumia’s position. The party’s eventual decision will depend on its internal processes and the outcome of its presidential candidate selection arrangements.
