Ibrahim Urges Ghanaians to Apologize to Ken Ofori-Atta Following Ghana Statistical Revelation
Abdul Rauf Ibrahim has sparked discussionon social media after calling on Ghanaiansto apologiseto former Finance Minister KenOfori-Atta for the criticism he endured duringhis time in office underthe administrationof former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Ofori-Atta faced widespread backlash over hismanagement of Ghana’s economy, with criticsblaming hispolicies for some of the financialdifficulties experienced during the previousgovernment. The controversysurroundinghis performance eventually contributed todemands for his removal as finance minister.
Despite the criticism, Ibrahim has now defendedthe former minister, arguing that Ghana’s latesteconomicfigures should prompt the publicto reconsider its assessment of his tenure.
In a message shared on X, Ibrahim cited dataattributed to the Ghana Statistical Service, whichputthe value of Ghana’s economy at GH¢1.2trillion and its overall growth rate at 5.7%.
He maintained that the figures offered a reasonto appreciate Ofori-Atta’s contribution to thecountry’seconomic management. Ibrahim wentfurther by describing him as the best financeminister Ghanahad ever had and insisting thatthe attacks against him warranted an apology.
“Let’s apologise to Ken Ofori-Atta for all theattacks. Man is the best finance ministerwe ever had,”he stated in his post.
Ibrahim’s message also recalled the strongcriticism directed at the economy duringOfori-Atta’s tenure, contrasting those earlierassessments with the economic figures he cited.
His position has added to the political debatesurrounding the former minister’s legacy.Supportersmay interpret the reported economicgrowth as evidence of progress, while criticsare likely to arguethat a proper assessmentmust also consider the cost of living, debtlevels, inflation and the financialdifficultiesexperienced by households during the period.
Although Ibrahim has expressed a cleardefence of Ofori-Atta, the figures he citeddo not, on their own, establish that theformer minister’s overall performance wassuccessful. His comments neverthelesshighlightthe continuing disagreement overhow Ghana’s economic record under theprevious administrationshould be judged.
