Museveni Breaks Silence as His Grandson Joins the Millitary

President Yoweri Museveni has watched his grandson join the ranks of Uganda’s military officers, extending a family tradition of service that now spans three generations.

Second Lieutenant Ruhamya Kainerugaba, 22, was commissioned into the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The ceremony took place at the Uganda Military Academy in Kabamba, Mubende District, with Museveni personally presiding.

Ruhamya is the son of Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK in 2000.

The young officer followed the same route, completing the 44-week Officer Commissioning Course at the academy in August 2026 before returning home for the commissioning.

His military career began in June 2025, when he enlisted in the UPDF as a Private. He briefly served in the Special Forces Command before travelling to Britain for officer training.

At Sandhurst, he trained alongside fellow Ugandan cadet Andrew Bakira Ruyondo, who won the International Sword award for the best overseas cadet.

Museveni used the occasion to commend General Muhoozi and his commanders for fighting corruption in the army and improving soldiers’ welfare.

In a post on X after the event, he said he was following improvements in barracks and pay, but stressed that tackling corruption mattered most because it directly affects the welfare of those in uniform.

He also had a message for the new officers, urging them to “remain disciplined, stay close to the people and serve Uganda with honour.”

Kenyans and East Africans on social media reacted warmly to the occasion. One X user praised General Muhoozi as an inspiring leader, while another wished the young officer well and congratulated the family.
