Kenyan Woman Shares Benefits She Gets as a US Military on Top of a Good Salary
A Kenyan woman serving on active duty in the United States Army has gone viral after listing the benefits she says military life has given her.
The soldier, who posts on TikTok as @afrykannah1, uses her page to document her enlistment journey and answer questions from Kenyans and others thinking of signing up.
In a recent video, she ran through the advantages she has enjoyed since joining.
She said she is now a US citizen and a full-time student, with the Army footing the bill for her education. She added that she receives paid IT certifications, free healthcare, a Thrift Savings Plan, free housing and food, and a waived Amex fee. She also said she has been stationed in South Korea, which has allowed her to travel.
The woman described the experience as one that has brought her financial freedom. She also pointed to the VA home loan programme as a future route to owning property in the United States.
Her post has drawn interest from members of the Kenyan diaspora weighing military service as a career path, particularly because she says enlisting opened the way to American citizenship.
However, benefits differ depending on a service member’s status and role. Joining the military does not automatically grant citizenship to non-citizens, as eligibility depends on meeting specific immigration and enlistment requirements set by the relevant authorities.
Her account nonetheless offers a practical look at what military life can mean for Kenyans already living in the US, and why some are exploring it as a way to build a future.
