Three Candidates Emerge as Possible Opposition Flagbearers After Gachagua-Sifuna Talks
Rigathi Gachagua, Edwin Sifuna and Kalonzo Musyoka have emerged as potential presidential flagbearers for the United Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election, as political leaders intensify negotiations on how to challenge President William Ruto.
The discussions involving the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka are expected to shape the opposition’s strategy in the coming months.
According to Citizen Digital, Gachagua and leaders associated with Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement held discussions at the former Deputy President’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on October 20, 2026. The meeting reportedly focused on cooperation between the two political camps and preparations for the next general election.
The leaders are said to have agreed to delay the decision on their preferred presidential candidate until next year, giving the opposition more time to assess its options and negotiate a possible political arrangement.
Sifuna, who has increasingly positioned himself as a prominent figure in the opposition, could emerge as a contender for the country’s top seat. His growing political profile has attracted attention as sections of the opposition seek to broaden their appeal beyond traditional political strongholds.
Gachagua is also considered a possible candidate, particularly because of his political influence in the Mount Kenya region and his ongoing efforts to build an alternative political movement. His ability to mobilise supporters in the region could become an important factor in the opposition’s calculations.
Kalonzo, meanwhile, remains an experienced opposition leader whose participation could be crucial in efforts to establish a united front. His involvement in future negotiations is expected to help determine how different political factions can work together ahead of the polls.
The discussions also reportedly explored the possibility of joint political rallies as the leaders seek to strengthen their networks and attract more supporters across the country.
Gachagua has previously indicated that he would be willing to support Sifuna if the senator emerged as the strongest candidate capable of defeating Ruto. He has also suggested that he could consider serving as Sifuna’s running mate under a suitable political arrangement.
However, the opposition has yet to announce a final presidential candidate, leaving room for further negotiations among interested leaders.
The emerging alliance faces the challenge of balancing individual ambitions while developing a common strategy. How Gachagua, Sifuna and Kalonzo resolve their political differences could significantly influence the shape of the 2027 presidential contest.
