GoldBod to Roll Out Financing Scheme for Small-Scale Miners in 2027, Says Sammy Gyamfi
Ghana’s Gold Board (GoldBod) has announced plans to launch a formalisation and financing programme for artisanal and small-scale miners in 2027, aimed at boosting productivity, creating jobs and curbing the environmental damage associated with mining.
Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, disclosed this at the African Minerals Policy Forum, stating that the initiative will be implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the University of Mines and Technology, with technical backing from South Africa’s Rand Refinery. The programme is designed to help miners formalise their operations, improve gold recovery rates and lower operating costs.
Gyamfi stressed that regulation alone is insufficient and must be paired with practical support that enables miners to operate legally and sustainably. He argued that well-organised small-scale mining has the potential to improve livelihoods, strengthen local economies, generate foreign exchange and expand indigenous businesses.
“Reform will endure only when compliance becomes a pathway to opportunity rather than hardships,” he remarked, adding that proper formalisation and financing could help the sector support livelihoods, bolster reserves and advance national development in a sustainable manner.
