NSA Weighs Major Overhaul or New Construction for Accra Sports Stadium

The National Sports Authority (NSA) is considering two options for the future of the Accra Sports Stadium: extensive rehabilitation of the existing facility or the construction of a new stadium to overcome persistent engineering challenges.

The authority’s acting Director-General, Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, said officials were examining the facility’s structural and infrastructure deficiencies to establish the most effective way to address them.

He explained that the repairs would have to be prioritised and implemented in phases, as resolving all the problems at once would not be practical.

In an interview with Citi Sports, Prof. Osei Sarpong emphasised the importance of the stadium to Ghana’s sporting activities, despite growing concerns about its condition. He said the NSA would assess the available options before deciding whether to upgrade the current structure or replace it entirely.

The issue has attracted renewed attention following remarks by former NSA Board Chairman Prof. Fred Awaah, who described the stadium as a “death trap” on August 29. He also suggested that the facility should be demolished if the authority had the power to make such a decision.

Responding to the concerns, Prof. Osei Sarpong indicated that the immediate task was to identify the stadium’s most pressing problems and address them systematically. He maintained that the facility could not simply be demolished while the authority continued to assess its long-term future.

He said the NSA intended to work through the identified shortcomings gradually, with attention focused on improving the stadium’s condition.

Among the problems cited by the acting director-general are inadequate water storage capacity and ageing pipework that continues to deteriorate.

Prof. Osei Sarpong attributed some of the infrastructure challenges to the stadium’s age and its proximity to the sea. He also raised concerns about the lack of an underground water tank, noting that the facility was built several decades ago.

The authority is expected to continue investigating the extent of the infrastructure problems and determine which areas require immediate repairs. However, no specific deadline has been announced for choosing between a major renovation and the construction of a replacement facility.

Despite the concerns, the Accra Sports Stadium remains a key venue for football in Ghana. Prof. Osei Sarpong said it is currently the only stadium in the country accredited by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Its accreditation makes the facility particularly important for hosting football matches, placing additional pressure on the NSA to address its infrastructure challenges while maintaining its usefulness.

The authority must therefore balance the need for immediate improvements with the broader question of providing a reliable sporting facility for the future.

Until a final decision is reached, the NSA plans to continue addressing the stadium’s defects in stages while evaluating the most suitable long-term option.
