SAD NEWS: Several Injured as Goons Attack UDA Leader’s Event in Bungoma
Several people have been injured after suspected goons disrupted an empowerment event attended by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet in Webuye West Constituency, Bungoma County.
The incident occurred at Matulo Girls High School shortly after Wetangula, Kibet and other Kenya Kwanza leaders had left the venue. The event was organised to support boda boda operators and improve their livelihoods. However, the gathering turned chaotic when the suspected attackers stormed the venue.
According to reports, the group assaulted attendees, stole mobile phones and cash, and set fire to T shirts bearing the colours of the Ford Kenya and United Democratic Alliance parties.
The youths also blocked the Webuye to Eldoret highway and burnt tyres, disrupting traffic. Some people who challenged their actions were reportedly attacked, forcing others to flee for safety.
Bungoma County Boda Boda chairman Alex Kisuya condemned the incident and called on police to arrest those responsible.
Kisuya said the meeting had proceeded peacefully until the leaders departed.
He alleged that trouble started when some youths demanded Sh500 each from the money raised to support boda boda operators in Webuye West.He urged security agencies to investigate the incident and establish whether politicians had a hand in organising the violence.
He also warned against using motorcycle taxi operators to disrupt peaceful community activities.
Senator Wafula Wakoli equally condemned the attack, saying it was unfortunate that an initiative intended to improve residents’ livelihoods had been overshadowed by violence.
He wished the injured a speedy recovery and called on police to investigate the matter and ensure those responsible faced the law.
The incident comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Kenya Kwanza leaders seeking to strengthen their support in Western Kenya.
During the event, Wetangula urged the Luhya community to support President Ruto’s re-election bid, arguing that the region could strengthen its political position ahead of the 2032 presidential race.Kibet and several local MPs also backed Wetangula’s future presidential ambitions while urging residents to support Ruto in the next election.
The attack has raised concerns about political violence, with leaders calling for peace and urging residents to reject violence as the country prepares for the next general election.
