World Rugby Makes Final Decision on Springboks’ Controversial 7-1 Bench Plan Ahead of November Tour
World Rugby has made its position clear on the Springboks’ controversial 7-1 bench strategy ahead of their November matches. Despite continued criticism from some rugby figures, the governing body has no plans to ban the tactic.
The 7-1 bench split has become closely associated with South Africa under head coach Rassie Erasmus. The strategy sees the Springboks select seven forwards and only one back among their eight replacements. It is designed to give the team extra strength and physical power during the final stages of a match.
The tactic has attracted plenty of debate because some people believe it gives teams with strong forward packs an advantage. Former international referee Nigel Owens has been among those calling for changes to the number of replacements allowed in rugby. He believes having fewer substitutes could encourage players to maintain higher fitness levels and could eventually prevent teams from using the 7-1 strategy.
However, World Rugby has previously examined the issue from a medical and scientific perspective. Chief executive Alan Gilpin said research had found no evidence that using a heavily forward-focused bench increased the risk of injuries. Because of those findings, there is currently no plan to introduce a rule specifically banning the 7-1 split.
This means Erasmus remains free to use the strategy during the Springboks’ upcoming November campaign. South Africa are scheduled to face Italy on 7 November, France on 13 November and Ireland on 21 November as part of the Nations Championship.
The decision will likely please Springbok supporters, particularly because the 7-1 bench has played an important role in South Africa’s recent success. The famous Bomb Squad approach allows the Boks to bring fresh forwards onto the field and maintain pressure late in games.
For now, the debate is far from over. Critics may continue pushing for changes, but World Rugby’s current position means the Springboks can continue using their controversial 7-1 bench split as they prepare for their November challenges.
