Raila Odinga & Nurse Who Tried to Save MP Ng’eno’s Life Honoured on Mashujaa Day

Nurse Jacobeth Jeptoo was among 264 Kenyans who received national honours during the 63rd Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

Ms Jeptoo was honoured for her bravery in helping survivors of the helicopter crash that killed Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno and five other people in Nandi County in February 2026.

The nurse rushed to the crash site in Chepkiep, Mosop Sub-County, carrying gloves and attempted to assist the victims despite the danger at the scene. She was praised for her courage, compassion and swift action to save lives.

Other heroes recognised included former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. Raila was honoured for his contribution to multiparty democracy, constitutional reforms and social justice. He opposed one-party rule and helped advance political freedom.

He also participated in reforms that contributed to the adoption of the 2010 Constitution while serving as Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013.

Freedom fighters remembered included Koitalel Arap Samoei, Mekatilili wa Menza, Dedan Kimathi and Field Marshal Muthoni wa Kirima. President William Ruto also paid tribute to Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and his fellow freedom fighters.

President Ruto said remembering national heroes should not be limited to celebrations. Instead, Kenyans should protect the freedom, democracy and Constitution for which these heroes had fought.

He emphasised that the responsibility of the current generation was to build a nation that offers equality and opportunities to every citizen.
