Junior Khanye Questions Kaizer Motaung Jr’s Readiness to Lead Kaizer Chiefs as Bobby Gets Praise
Former Kaizer Chiefs player Junior Khanye has questioned whether Kaizer Motaung Jr is ready to lead the Soweto giants, raising concerns about his ability to manage people, listen to different opinions and connect with those around him.
Khanye, who has been outspoken about the club’s direction, believes leadership at a major football institution such as Chiefs requires more than occupying a senior position. In his view, effective management depends on communication, accessibility and the ability to understand the needs of players and staff.
While expressing reservations about Motaung Jr, Khanye praised Bobby Motaung, whom he remembers as a hands-on general manager during his time at Naturena.
“For me, Bobby, the one I knew, was good even though everyone has their mistakes,” Khanye said.
The former midfielder explained that Bobby was approachable and willing to listen when players encountered difficulties. According to Khanye, his experience at the club gave him the impression that Bobby understood the importance of maintaining relationships with the people working under him.
“When I was there, he was very involved as the general manager. He is human and has his own personality, but when talking to someone, he would give them an honest ear. When I had issues, it was easy to speak to him,” he added.
Khanye’s assessment contrasts with his concerns about Kaizer Motaung Jr, whom he knew as a teammate before the latter became involved in the club’s leadership.
“With Junior, I played with him, and I am not sure he was ready to manage the team. You have to be able to interact with the people,” Khanye said.
He also questioned whether Motaung Jr was prepared to consider perspectives different from his own, asking: “Can he listen to someone else’s opinion?”
The comments have added to the ongoing discussion about leadership and decision-making at Kaizer Chiefs, a club whose supporters continue to expect improved performances and consistent progress.
However, Khanye’s remarks represent his personal assessment of the club’s leadership. They do not, on their own, establish whether Motaung Jr is capable of managing the institution.
The debate ultimately raises questions about the qualities required to lead a club with Chiefs’ history, expectations and demanding supporter base.
