Ruto Reports Drop in Livestock Sexed Semen Cost From KSh8,000 to KSh1,400

President William Ruto has reported a reduction in the cost of sexed semen from KSh8,000 to KSh1,400, highlighting the change as part of his administration’s progress in livestock production.

Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kipkeino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Ruto said the annual number of artificial inseminations had also increased from 900,000 to 1.28 million.

The figures formed part of the President’s address on developments in the agricultural sector, particularly livestock breeding and production.

“We have strengthened livestock production, increasing annual artificial inseminations from 900,000 to 1.28 million and reducing the cost of sexed semen from KSh8,000 to KSh1,400,” Ruto said.

The reported reduction means the cost of sexed semen has fallen by KSh6,600, equivalent to 82.5 per cent of the previous price.

Sexed semen is used in artificial insemination to increase the likelihood of producing a calf of a preferred sex. The technology is particularly relevant to dairy farmers seeking to increase the number of female calves in their herds for future milk production.

Artificial insemination also enables farmers to access selected genetics without keeping breeding bulls on their farms. Its effectiveness depends on factors such as animal health, breeding management and the availability of trained insemination service providers.

Livestock production is an important component of Kenya’s agricultural sector, supporting households through milk and meat production, employment and related businesses. The cost of breeding services can affect farmers’ ability to improve their herds and increase productivity.

Ruto’s remarks came as he continued to outline his administration’s achievements during the national celebrations. With the 2027 General Election approaching, the President has been highlighting developments across different sectors as he seeks a second term.
