Marawa Reveals What Allegedly Sparked Steve Komphela’s Clash With Wiliete Coach in Angola

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly revealed what led to his heated confrontation with Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi in Angola. Sports broadcaster Robert Marawa has shared Komphela’s version of events, which includes allegations of racial abuse, verbal insults and spitting.

The incident occurred after Sundowns played to a goalless draw against the Angolan club in the first leg of their CAF Champions League qualifying tie on Sunday, 18 October 2026. The confrontation quickly became a major talking point in South African football, particularly after reports emerged that Bianchi had been taken to hospital for medical attention.

Speaking on his Marawa Sports Worldwide programme, Marawa revealed that he had spoken directly to Komphela about the incident and subsequently shared the coach’s account with listeners.

According to Marawa, Komphela identified alleged disrespect and racism as the main factors behind his reaction during the confrontation.

“He said, no matter how big your buffer is, his biggest weakness is disrespect and racism, which he felt happened,” Marawa explained while recounting their conversation.

The broadcaster further claimed that Komphela understood the Portuguese insults allegedly directed at him by Bianchi during their exchange.

Marawa reported that Komphela believed he knew exactly what was being said to him. However, the broadcaster declined to repeat the alleged insults on national radio, explaining that the language was inappropriate for broadcast.

Marawa also claimed that Komphela accused Bianchi of spitting at him, an allegation that reportedly escalated tensions between the two coaches.

According to the account shared by Marawa, Komphela had been supervising additional training for Sundowns players who needed more time on the pitch after the match. He allegedly encountered Bianchi near the tunnel, with the confrontation reportedly linked to an earlier disagreement at half-time.

Komphela is said to have acknowledged lashing out during the incident while maintaining that he felt provoked and needed to defend himself.

Nevertheless, these details reflect Komphela’s reported version of events and do not independently establish precisely how the confrontation unfolded. The allegations of racial abuse and spitting have not been independently verified, and a complete account from both coaches remains important.

Meanwhile, Wiliete SC vice-president Vitorino Lunga Vicele reportedly condemned the alleged assault and indicated that the club was considering lodging complaints with the relevant Confederation of African Football (CAF) bodies and Angolan authorities.

Vicele also stated that Bianchi had received medical attention and was recovering.

Further reports suggested that Sundowns management had apologised to their Angolan opponents, although accounts differed regarding whether a formal complaint had been lodged.

As the controversy continues to attract attention, the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation and any potential disciplinary action remain unclear. No final disciplinary outcome had been confirmed in the reports available.
