Kenyans React as Gachagua Sends This Message to Ruto Hours After Returning to Wamunyoro From the US

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revisited his past political relationship with President William Ruto, recalling how he supported him despite their different ethnic backgrounds.

“When we supported Ruto, he was not Kamau, he was Kipchirchir, and we supported him,” Gachagua said.

His remarks highlight the political differences between the two leaders, who worked together during the 2022 General Election before their relationship deteriorated.

Ruto and Gachagua campaigned together under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), with their partnership helping them secure victory in the August 2022 presidential election.

However, their relationship later broke down, culminating in Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024. Since then, the former Deputy President has become one of Ruto’s most vocal critics and has been building his own political base through the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Gachagua has repeatedly accused the President of abandoning the people who helped him win the election. He has also challenged claims that his political approach is based on ethnic interests, arguing that his earlier support for Ruto demonstrated his willingness to work with leaders from other communities.

The remarks come at a time when political activities are gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.

On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Gachagua hosted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and other Linda Mwananchi leaders at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.

The meeting attracted attention because of growing discussions about cooperation between opposition figures seeking to challenge Ruto in the next election.

Gachagua has previously said he would be willing to put aside his presidential ambitions if that helped the opposition unite behind one candidate.

However, no final agreement on a joint presidential candidate has been announced.

As political consultations continue, Gachagua’s past partnership with Ruto remains an important part of the debate surrounding alliances and leadership ahead of 2027.

Do you think political leaders should put national unity ahead of their individual ambitions?
