Were Chiefs Correctly Denied Penalty? Hlungwani Explains

Former Premier Soccer League (PSL) referee Victor Hlungwani has praised referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa for his courage in making the correct decision during Kaizer Chiefs’ 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC.

The controversy occurred in the closing stages of the match when the ball appeared to strike a Stellenbosch player’s hand inside the penalty area. Gasa initially pointed to the penalty spot but later reversed his decision after consulting the assistant referee.

The change sparked frustration among Kaizer Chiefs players and supporters, who believed their team had been denied a late opportunity to secure a victory.

However, Hlungwani has since analysed the incident and supported Gasa’s decision, insisting that the officials were correct not to award a penalty.

Speaking on Soccerzone, Hlungwani explained that Gasa initially indicated a penalty before discussing the incident with the assistant referee and subsequently awarding a corner kick.

According to Hlungwani, the Stellenbosch player’s hand was in a natural position, meaning the incident did not warrant a penalty.

He firmly rejected suggestions that Chiefs had been unfairly treated by the officials.

Hlungwani’s assessment backs Gasa’s decision to overturn his initial call, maintaining that the referee acted correctly after consulting his assistant.

The explanation offers clarity on a contentious moment that left Amakhosi players and fans disappointed following the closely contested encounter.
