How Otiende Omollo Reacted After Ruto Honoured Late Ochieng Oneko During Mashujaa Celebrations

President William Ruto’s decision to honour the late freedom fighter Ramogi Achieng Oneko during the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations has drawn attention to the legacy of Kenya’s independence heroes.

The national celebrations were held on Tuesday, October 20, at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, where the Head of State recognised individuals who played significant roles in the country’s struggle for independence.

Among those remembered was Oneko, a prominent nationalist who was part of the Kapenguria Six, a group of political leaders arrested by the British colonial government in 1952.

However, Otiende Amollo’s specific reaction to Ruto’s tribute could not be independently confirmed by the time of publication.

Amollo, the Member of Parliament for Rarieda Constituency in Siaya County, comes from a region closely associated with Oneko’s political and historical legacy. The late freedom fighter remains an important figure in the history of Kenya’s independence movement.

During his address, Ruto acknowledged the sacrifices made by Oneko and fellow members of the Kapenguria Six, including Jomo Kenyatta, Bildad Kaggia, Kung’u Karumba, Fred Kubai and Paul Ngei.

The six leaders were arrested during the colonial government’s efforts to suppress the independence movement. Their detention became one of the defining episodes in Kenya’s journey towards self-government.

Ruto also announced plans to launch Oneko’s biography, The Price of Freedom, which is expected to preserve his contribution to the country’s liberation struggle.

The President noted the importance of remembering individuals who endured imprisonment and other hardships while fighting for the rights and freedom of Kenyans.

Born in 1920 in Uyoma, Bondo, Siaya County, Oneko became one of the prominent figures in the independence movement.

His recognition during Mashujaa Day has renewed attention on the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and the importance of preserving their history for younger generations.

The planned biography launch is expected to provide further insight into Oneko’s life, political journey and contribution to Kenya’s independence.

As the country continues to celebrate its national heroes, the recognition serves as a reminder of the struggles that shaped modern Kenya.
