NDC Reverses Position As Obuasi SHTS Headmaster Is Told To Step Aside
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai to step aside from the Juaben Constituency election, citing the need to protect transparency and accountability while a police investigation continues.
The decision was announced in a press release dated October 20, 2026, and signed by the partyâs General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey. It updates an earlier statement issued on October 19 concerning Abdulaiâs candidature in the partyâs constituency election.
According to the release, the NDCâs Functional Executive Committee (FEC) reconsidered the matter and concluded that Abdulai should temporarily withdraw from the contest to allow the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to conduct its investigation without hindrance.
âAfter further consideration, FEC has directed that Mr Zakaria Abdulai step aside, in the overriding interest of transparency and accountability, to allow for an unhindered investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service,â the statement said.
The directive comes amid allegations of sexual abuse involving female students at Obuasi SHTS, which have generated significant public concern following an investigative documentary by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni. The allegations remain subject to investigation and have not been established as proven facts.
In its statement, the NDC emphasised that the decision should not be interpreted as a determination of the merits of the allegations against Abdulai. The party stressed that he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence while the investigation proceeds.
The Functional Executive Committee also expressed confidence that the CID would conduct a thorough, fair and expeditious investigation, adding that the party would be guided by the outcome.
The statement further directed the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee to take note of the decision and act accordingly.
The latest announcement marks a change in the partyâs handling of Abdulaiâs participation in the constituency election. The NDC had previously indicated that he could proceed with his candidature while investigations continued, but its new position places greater emphasis on allowing the police process to proceed without interference.
The decision comes as the allegations continue to attract public attention, with calls for accountability and the protection of students. The outcome of the CID investigation is expected to be central to any further decisions concerning Abdulai and his political participation.
