Around 40 ANC Members in Seshego Reportedly Join MK Party
Around 40 members of the African National Congress (ANC) in Seshego Zone 4, Limpopo, have reportedly resigned from the governing party and joined the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party at a public gathering highlighting changing political affiliations in the area.
The reported defections took place on Saturday at a community hall event organised by MK Party regional coordinator Themba Nkosi. During the gathering, former ANC members reportedly removed their green-and-gold party shirts and donned the MK Party’s yellow regalia, publicly marking their move to the opposition party.
The development has attracted attention because some of those who reportedly left the ANC held positions within its local structures, including ward committee roles and a voting district coordination position.
Although the number of members involved is relatively small in the context of provincial politics, the reported resignations have drawn renewed attention to party membership and political organisation in Limpopo’s Capricorn District.
According to reports, approximately 40 ANC members participated in the gathering and formally indicated their intention to join the MK Party.
Among those who reportedly resigned were long-serving members who had participated in the ANC’s local organisational activities for several years. One individual was described as a former voting district coordinator who had served the party for 19 consecutive years.
The departure of experienced members could have implications for local party structures, particularly where individuals have been involved in organising activities, communicating with residents and mobilising support.
However, the longer-term implications of the resignations remain unclear. The number of members involved does not, on its own, establish whether the move reflects a broader shift in political support across Seshego or surrounding communities.
The reports also described the departures as voluntary, with no money allegedly exchanged during the event. These details have not been independently verified.
The gathering was organised by MK Party regional coordinator Themba Nkosi, who reportedly oversaw the event at which the former ANC members announced their new political affiliation.
The change in party regalia provided a public demonstration of the reported transition, with participants replacing their ANC colours with those associated with the MK Party.
Such gatherings can serve an organisational purpose for political parties by formally welcoming new members and drawing attention to recruitment efforts within local communities.
For the MK Party, attracting people with experience in established political structures could provide an opportunity to strengthen its organisational presence in the area. Former branch activists and local coordinators may bring knowledge of community concerns, political organisation and voter engagement.
Nevertheless, the reported gathering does not establish how the new members will influence the party’s activities or whether additional ANC members intend to follow the same path.
ANC branch secretary Mandla Dlamini was reportedly present during the proceedings, when the departing members’ names were removed from the party’s membership register.
According to the account provided, Dlamini did not publicly comment during the gathering.
The reported removal of the names marked an administrative aspect of the departures, although the precise membership procedures followed have not been independently confirmed.
The development raises questions about how the local ANC branch will respond and whether it plans to strengthen recruitment, improve member engagement or address concerns that may have contributed to the resignations.
No specific explanation from the departing members regarding their reasons for leaving the ANC was included in the report. Without their accounts, it would be premature to attribute the defections to particular disagreements, leadership disputes or policy concerns.
