Veteran broadcaster Fred Obachi Machoka has paid tribute to a young man he says kept his Machoka @50 Grand Concert on track when everyone else had lost hope. He described him as the person behind the success of the event, who was hardly seen but always present.

Machoka shared the message on Facebook on Tuesday, October 20, alongside a photo of a tall, well-built young man standing at the event grounds.

He asked how his son managed it when everyone else had given up, thanked him, and prayed for God’s blessings on him and his generation. Machoka did not name the young man in the post.

The concert took place on Saturday, October 10, at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi. The 12-hour celebration drew thousands of rhumba fans and featured Koffi Olomide, Mbilia Bel, Sam Fan Thomas, Les Wanyika and Them Mushrooms. COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna were among the guests.

The Senate also recognised Machoka’s five decades of promoting African music and culture, with the Media Council of Kenya partnering in the celebration.

The night was briefly disrupted when Olomide walked off stage after an unexpected confrontation. He later returned and performed for two hours with his Quartier Latin International Band, and Machoka thanked him publicly for showing up despite the drama.

Kenyans flooded the comments with praise and curiosity. Some said the son takes after his father, while others asked Machoka to introduce him.

One commenter, Blessed Risper, appeared to identify him as Victor, a former operations manager at Avanti Restaurant Kenya. Another, Clayton Ogawa, suggested Machoka’s national honour be upgraded from OGW to EGH.
