Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea handed golden Premier League opportunity as Man City punishment revealed

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso could receive a major boost in his pursuit of the Premier League title if Manchester City are hit with a significant points deduction over their financial charges.

According to a report by Football London on Tuesday 20 October 2026, Manchester City are reportedly facing a “huge points deduction” that could “guarantee relegation” from the Premier League this season, according to Oliver Holt.

City have been accused of multiple financial rule breaches, including alleged sham sponsorships and artificially inflated revenues.

The Premier League reportedly found the club guilty of 80 financial violations and 34 of 35 charges relating to non-cooperation and obstruction.

However, City have maintained their innocence and appealed the ruling, with the outcome potentially having major implications for the Premier League title race.

A deduction of around 70 points or more could leave Pep Guardiola’s former club facing relegation, although the final punishment and its timing remain uncertain.

The development could significantly change the outlook for Chelsea, who are seeking their first Premier League title in 10 seasons.

Manchester City have won all seven of their opening league matches under Enzo Maresca, putting them among the leading contenders for the championship.

Without City in the race, defending champions Arsenal would have a stronger position at the top, while Chelsea, Brighton and Liverpool could have an opportunity to close the gap with 21 matches remaining.

Alonso’s Chelsea are five points behind Arsenal in the scenario outlined in the report, leaving the Blues with ground to make up but still within reach of the title.

Chelsea’s attacking options offer reasons for optimism, with Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto providing considerable firepower. Neto’s recent brace against Everton has further strengthened the manager’s attacking choices.

Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson have also been tested together in central midfield, while Chelsea could strengthen that area during the January transfer window.

However, defensive concerns remain a potential obstacle, particularly with goalkeeper Emi Martinez and captain Reece James sidelined.

A clean sheet against Everton could offer encouragement as young players Mike Penders and Josh Acheampong seek to establish themselves.

Chelsea face Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in their next league fixtures, providing an early test of their ability to sustain a title challenge.
