Government Given 14 Days to Slash Fuel Prices or Face Total National Shutdown

Ordinary South Africans are fed up with sky-high petrol prices, and a citizens’ group is now putting government on notice.

The Concerned Citizens of South Africa (CCSA) has given the authorities exactly 14 days to cut fuel prices by 50 percent. If nothing happens, the group plans a three-day national shutdown that could bring the country to a standstill.

CCSA spokesperson Siphiwe Mpungose said people can no longer carry the heavy load of petrol that costs more than R30 a litre. “Paying this high price of R30 and more is unfair to South Africans,” he said. The organisation wants the price dropped to around R15 a litre by setting aside many of the levies and taxes that currently push the cost up.

The group is calling for lower fuel taxes, a cut in levies, and a full review of the way fuel prices are calculated. Mpungose warned that if government ignores the demand, CCSA will bring in more support. This includes trade unions, truck associations and SANTACO, the national taxi body.

Their plan is simple and tough: no vehicles on the road and no one filling up at the pumps for three full days. “We are mobilising all forces… so that the government will feel the heat and also feel what we are feeling now,” Mpungose explained.

The warning comes after planned protests in major cities such as Pretoria and Cape Town. High fuel costs hit everything – taxi fares, food prices and the weekly grocery bill. Many families say they are struggling to cope.

CCSA insists the action will stay peaceful but makes it clear the clock is ticking. South Africans will be watching closely to see if government listens this time or faces the consequences of a full national shutdown.
