Ghana risks losing the hosting rights for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as concerns grow over the government’s apparent lack of urgency in funding preparations for the tournament.
CAF awarded Ghana the hosting rights in April 2026, with the competition scheduled for March 2027 as part of the country’s 70th Independence anniversary celebrations.
However, with the tournament fast approaching, there has been no publicly documented evidence of major infrastructure upgrades at the proposed venues, raising questions about the country’s readiness to host the continental competition.
Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Cape Coast Stadium and the University of Ghana Stadium have been earmarked for the tournament, while the Accra Sports Stadium is also under consideration.
The condition of these facilities remains a concern, with improvements needed to ensure they meet CAF’s requirements. The continued use of stadium facilities for concerts and church conferences has also raised questions about pitch maintenance and the preparation of venues for international football.
The situation is particularly worrying given the reported requirement for host facilities to be ready five months before kick-off. If that deadline applies to Ghana’s tournament, the authorities have little time to demonstrate meaningful progress.
The government’s apparent failure to show clear progress on funding and infrastructure preparations has put pressure on the Ghana Football Association and the relevant stadium authorities to provide answers.
Ghana last hosted the U-20 AFCON in 1999, when the Black Satellites won the title on home soil. Losing the hosting rights would be a major setback, particularly during a year when the country hopes to celebrate its football history.
CAF has not announced any decision to withdraw Ghana’s hosting rights. However, without urgent financial commitments and visible progress, Ghana’s ability to stage the tournament could come under serious threat.
