Michigan’s Kyle Whittingham has yet to name starting QB for Indiana matchup

The Michigan Wolverines have a plan at quarterback. Head coach Kyle Whittingham isn’t going to reveal that plan until he has to, but there is a plan in place.

Logically, Tommy Carr is going to be Michigan’s starting quarterback against the No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers in Week 8.

The grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr (as well as the younger brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr), the freshman replaced former No. 1 overall recruit Bryce Underwood at halftime in Michigan’s game against Penn State last weekend.

Michigan went into halftime down 3-0. Carr led the Wolverines to a 21-18 win.

And yet, on Monday, Whittingham wouldn’t commit to Carr as the starter against Indiana.

“We know exactly what we’re doing and the plan going forward,” Whittingham said, per Jake Trotter of ESPN. “We’re not going to tip our hand to the opponent. But we have a good plan in place.”

Again, the logical move for Michigan is to ride Carr’s hot hand.

He completed 5-of-7 passes for just 47 yards against Penn State, but he led the Wolverines to three touchdown drives. He also rushed for a touchdown with 2:58 to go that was ultimately the game sealer for Michigan.

“Saw good stuff out of what Tommy did in that second half,” Whittingham said of Carr. “He’s a real smooth guy, very efficient with his style.”

Underwood completed just 5-of-11 passes for 43 yards with two interceptions. He’s now thrown six interceptions compared to just five touchdown passes this season, and it would not be surprising at all if Michigan rolled with Carr the rest of the way and the former No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class ends up hitting the transfer portal.

Underwood has plenty of talent, but he hasn’t lived up to his potential in Year 2 at Michigan. Perhaps a fresh start could help him.
