COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Coles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash involving a Mattoon squad car.

The accident happened on Saturday, shortly before 1:30 p.m. According to Ryan Hurst, deputy chief with the Mattoon Police Department, an officer was responding to a report of a structure fire with his lights and siren activated.

The officer was traveling northbound on 6th Street, and a passenger vehicle was traveling westbound on Charleston Avenue. It is unclear at this time how exactly the accident happened.

The officer was evaluated at Sarah Bush Hospital and is now back to work, according to Hurst.

Hurst referred WCIA to the sheriff’s office for further details since they’re the investigating agency. WCIA reached out to the sheriff’s office but did not received additional information by the time of publishing.
