President Mahama calls for patience, restraint to sustain peace in Dagbon
Share on Twitter President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu II, chiefs, elders and residents to exercise patience and restraint to sustain peace in the Dagbon Kingdom.
He said the enduring interests of Dagbon must take precedence over individual differences, urging all concerned to resolve disagreements through dialogue and consultation.
President Mahama made the appeal when the Regent of Dagbon and a delegation of chiefs and elders paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.
He commended the Regent for his commitment to building on the legacy of his late father, the Ya-Na, and maintaining the bridges of unity established during his leadership.
“Your successful installation as Regent of Dagbon is a testament to the enduring peace that currently exists in Dagbon,” he said.
President Mahama acknowledged the responsibility entrusted to the Regent, noting that his role required wisdom, patience, consultation and fairness.
He assured the Regent of his government’s goodwill and cooperation, adding that the Presidency would maintain open channels of communication with the Gbewaa Palace and respond to concerns raised by the traditional authority.
“The peace of Dagbon is precious, and we must protect it through our words, our decisions and our treatment of one another,” he said.
The President also encouraged the Regent to continue engaging families, communities and generations to ensure that every citizen had a stake in Dagbon’s future.
He urged young people to contribute to the development of their communities, uphold their traditions and resolve differences through dialogue.
President Mahama further stressed the importance of respecting the customs, traditions and institutions of Dagbon, adding that government’s role was to support a peaceful environment and ensure the security of all communities.
He said the people of Dagbon deserved to see peace reflected in improved livelihoods, stronger public services and greater opportunities for their children.
President Mahama assured the Regent that Dagbon would receive its fair share of development projects undertaken by his government.
He identified roads, education, healthcare, agricultural livelihoods and water supply as key areas of cooperation between government and traditional authorities.
The President also announced that funding had been secured for water projects in Tamale, Damongo and Yendi, with work expected to commence soon.
He said the government had also financed the replacement of old pumps at the existing Dalong waterworks, adding that the new pumps were expected to begin operating by November to increase water supply to Tamale ahead of the larger project.
President Mahama expressed his willingness to receive the Regent’s concerns and advice, pledging to direct the relevant ministers and officials to engage with the palace on matters requiring follow-up.
He prayed for wisdom, good health and strength for the Regent as he carried out his responsibilities, and expressed hope that Dagbon would continue to enjoy peace, unity and progress.
