Champions League: Barcelona Defender Faces Late Fitness Test Ahead of PSG Clash

According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday October 19, 2026, Barcelona defender Gerard Martin will undergo a fitness assessment during training today before Hansi Flick decides whether he can start against Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday’s Champions League clash.

The Spanish defender has recovered sufficiently to join the squad after suffering an Achilles tendon problem against Real Betis on Saturday.

Martin was substituted at half-time during Barcelona’s 5-3 victory over Real Betis after taking a blow to his Achilles tendon. However, subsequent medical examinations ruled out a serious injury. This allowed Flick to include him in the travelling squad for the trip to Paris.

According to Javi Miguel of AS, Martin will be assessed during Barcelona’s training session at the Parc des Princes this afternoon. His physical response will determine whether he starts against the reigning European champions. If he experiences no discomfort, he is expected to feature from the beginning. Otherwise, he could start on the bench.

The 24-year-old has become an important member of Flick’s squad this season. He has appeared in nine of Barcelona’s 11 matches across all competitions, starting seven of them.

Martin’s fitness is particularly important because Barcelona are dealing with several defensive absences ahead of the European encounter. Andreas Christensen remains sidelined with an injury sustained before the international break. Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia have also been ruled out after picking up fresh injuries against Real Betis.

Consequently, Pau Cubarsi and Martin are the only established centre-back options available to Flick. The Barcelona coach has called up academy defender Alex Campos to provide additional cover.

If Martin fails to prove his fitness, Flick could consider deploying Frenkie de Jong in central defence, a position he has previously tested him in during training. Summer signing Rodri could also emerge as an alternative option.

Barcelona’s final defensive decision will therefore depend on Martin’s condition during today’s training session.
