10 things people should settle before a wedding, not after
Wedding preparations can consume months of planning, money and family discussions. However, some couples become so focused on the ceremony that they postpone conversations about the actual marriage, only to discover major differences after the celebration.
Couples should agree on whether they will rent, live with relatives or move into an existing home. Assuming that everything will work out after the wedding can create unnecessary tension.
They should discuss their incomes, debts, savings, household expenses and financial goals. They also need to decide how they will handle shared expenses.
3. How much they will support their families
In Ghana, supporting parents and siblings can be an important responsibility. Couples should discuss their existing commitments and agree on how to handle requests for financial assistance.
They should discuss whether they want children, their expectations about timing and how they intend to approach parenting.
Cooking, cleaning, laundry and shopping should not become sources of conflict because one partner assumed the other would handle everything.
6. How much influence their families will have
Couples should establish boundaries around visits, family advice, personal decisions and interference in disagreements.
Differences over church attendance, religious practices and how children will be raised can become major issues if they are never discussed.
One partner may receive a job opportunity in another city or country. Discussing career ambitions and possible relocation early can help prevent future conflict.
Couples should understand how each person responds to anger, criticism and difficult conversations. They should also agree on how to address problems without insults or intimidation.
One person may expect frequent affection and quality time, while the other believes providing financially is the main responsibility. Couples need to discuss what partnership means to each of them.
