Asiedu Nketiah Could Become Ghana’s Next President
Ghanaian musician Pope Skinny has thrown his support behind National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, expressing confidence that the experienced politician could eventually occupy the presidency.
The musician made his position known during a conversation with media personality Nana Romeo, where he explained that despite having limited interest in partisan politics, he admires some individuals within the political establishment.
Pope Skinny singled out Asiedu Nketiah, popularly referred to as General Mosquito, as the politician he particularly respects. He attributed his admiration to the NDC chairman’s lengthy political career and his perception of the politician’s public record.
He maintained that Asiedu Nketiah’s involvement in politics for more than four decades demonstrates his experience and makes him a suitable person to consider for the country’s highest leadership position.
“I’m not really interested in politics, but there are some people I love so much. My favourite is General Mosquito, Asiedu Nketiah. I believe he will be the next president of Ghana,” the musician stated.
Pope Skinny further argued that the NDC chairman had devoted considerable time and effort to politics. He also said he was not aware of any corruption scandal involving Asiedu Nketiah that had significantly undermined his reputation.
The musician’s endorsement comes amid discussions about whether Ghana should consider younger candidates for future presidential elections. He addressed arguments for generational change, including advocacy by politician and musician Kwame A Plus for younger people to assume leadership positions.
However, Pope Skinny suggested that an Asiedu Nketiah presidency could serve as an intermediate stage before younger politicians take over the country’s leadership. In his view, the veteran politician’s experience could help maintain continuity in government.
He also questioned whether a younger successor would be able to sustain the development agenda being pursued by President John Dramani Mahama.
On the performance of the current administration, Pope Skinny pointed to developments in road infrastructure and security as areas where he believes progress has been made. He cited improvements to roads that were previously in poor condition and expressed the view that security had improved compared with earlier periods.
His comments have added another perspective to the debate over political succession, the value of experience in governance and the participation of younger generations in Ghanaian politics.
