How Will It Reduce Prices Of Rice, Bread?—Atiku’s Aide Asks Tinubu After Receiving 7 Volumes Of UN Budget
Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has mocked President Bola Tinubu over reports that he received seven volumes of the proposed United Nations budget, questioning how the development would ease the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
Ibe made the remarks in a post on his X handle on Monday, sarcastically describing the development as another achievement under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda while highlighting the rising cost of food, fuel and transportation.
Congratulating the president, the ADC chieftain wrote: “Another historic achievement under Renewed Hope(lessness)! For the first time in 66 years, a Nigerian President has reportedly received seven volumes of the proposed United Nations budget.”
He, however, questioned the practical benefits of the development to ordinary Nigerians, asking whether the documents would translate into lower prices of essential commodities and improved purchasing power.
“Which volume will reduce the price of bread, rice, beans, yam, tomatoes and pepper?” Ibe asked.
He also questioned which of the volumes would reduce petrol and diesel prices, lower transport fares and put more money in Nigerians’ pockets, adding sarcastically that Nigerians could hardly photocopy the UN budget and present it to market women as legal tender.
To underscore his criticism, Ibe listed what he described as Nigeria’s own “seven volumes of economic hardship,” comprising expensive bread and rice, costly beans and yam, high prices of tomatoes and pepper, expensive petrol and diesel, rising transportation costs, declining purchasing power and empty pockets.
The former presidential spokesman further argued that Nigerians needed tangible economic relief rather than ceremonies and symbolic achievements.
“Mr President, Nigerians cannot eat diplomatic ceremonies, cook presidential photographs or fuel their vehicles with international documents!” he wrote.
Ibe maintained that Tinubu was elected to manage Nigeria’s economy and address the challenges confronting citizens, rather than celebrate the receipt of international documents.
“Nigerians ordered Renewed Hope. Professor Tinubu delivered seven volumes of further mathematics in suffering!” he added.
He concluded by urging the president to prioritise the cost of living and food affordability, declaring that “seven volumes of the UN budget cannot fill one empty stomach.”
The remarks come amid continuing political exchanges between supporters of the Tinubu administration and opposition figures over the government’s economic policies and their impact on Nigerians.
Ibe’s post did not provide further details about the proposed UN budget documents or the circumstances surrounding their presentation to Tinubu.
