Chelsea’s Alex Scott Transfer Advantage As Premier League Rivals Acknowledge Midfield Need
Chelsea’s pursuit of Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott could receive a boost ahead of the January transfer window, with rival Premier League clubs reportedly recognising that the Blues have the greatest need for his signature.
According to a report by The Athletic on Monday, 19 October 2026, Chelsea’s competitors have acknowledged the club’s pressing requirement for midfield reinforcements as manager Xabi Alonso seeks greater control and consistency from his team.
Bournemouth had initially planned to keep Scott until the end of the season. However, recent reports suggest the Cherries could consider selling the 23-year-old when the transfer window reopens in January.
Chelsea have tracked the England international since the summer and could face competition from other clubs interested in securing his services.
The Blues’ midfield difficulties have strengthened the case for another signing. Chelsea sold Enzo Fernandez during the summer but failed to bring in an adequate replacement, leaving Alonso to experiment with different combinations in the centre of the pitch.
Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson have recently developed an effective partnership, but the situation was more complicated when Caicedo was unavailable through injury. Attempts to find a reliable balance involving Romeo Lavia and Reece James did not produce the desired results.
James is now sidelined following another injury, further limiting Alonso’s options. Lavia remains available, while Argentine midfielder Valentin Barco is another alternative.
However, Barco has made only nine Premier League appearances and still lacks extensive experience in the competition.
Chelsea had also pursued Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara during the summer, but a move failed to materialise. The club will hope to avoid a similar outcome when the January window opens.
Scott could offer Alonso another option in midfield, although Chelsea would need to negotiate an acceptable fee with Bournemouth before any deal could progress.
The Blues are not short of midfield personnel, with Caicedo, Henderson, Lavia and Barco available when fit.
However, injuries and inconsistent performances have highlighted the importance of finding a dependable combination capable of controlling matches.
