Share on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Pocket[Berlin, Oct. 16, 2026] — Sleep technology has made sleep duration, sleep stages, and heart rate variability increasingly visible. But measuring sleep is only part of the challenge: understanding patterns does not always translate into actionable support.
Reflecting this shift, the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) will introduce Sleep Technology as a standalone track at Sleep Europe 2026, highlighting growing interest in technology-enabled sleep assessment and care.
One emerging area is transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a non-invasive approach that delivers electrical stimulation through the external ear to engage vagus nerve-associated pathways involved in autonomic regulation.
Clinical evidence for taVNS in sleep care is promising but preliminary. A 2024 randomized, sham-controlled trial published in JAMA Network Open reported improvements in sleep quality and insomnia severity among adults with chronic insomnia. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of six studies involving 336 participants also found improvements, although the certainty of evidence was rated low to very low. A 2026 meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials reported favorable sleep outcomes with tVNS more broadly.
Alongside clinical research, neuromodulation technology is exploring a shift from open-loop stimulation, which delivers preset stimulation, toward closed-loop approaches that use physiological signals to guide or adapt stimulation. A 2023 study by Szulczewski et al. investigated respiratory-gated taVNS, synchronizing stimulation with the breathing cycle. A 2024 pilot study by Tian et al. explored combining taVNS with slow breathing in people with insomnia. Together, these studies reflect growing interest in more physiologically responsive and individualized stimulation protocols.
Against this backdrop, the ZenoWell Luna Plus Set brings together three components to form an AI-guided closed-loop taVNS system: the Luna Plus Vagus Nerve Stimulator, ZenoBand MOBI, and the ZenoWell app with its Multimodal AI Coach. Built around three connected steps—Track, Understand, and Improve—the system represents an innovative approach to translating taVNS research into everyday home use.
The Luna Plus Set combines taVNS technology, wearable tracking, and sleep insights in one connected system. ZenoWell Track: Make Sleep Patterns VisibleThe ZenoWell app connects with ZenoWell wearables and compatible third-party devices, including Apple Watch and Oura Ring, bringing sleep data together in one place and turning overnight physiological signals into meaningful, understandable insights.
Powered by RAG technology and a curated database of vagus nerve research, ZenoWell’s Multimodal AI Coach combines wearable metrics, taVNS session logs, and daily context—including travel, late meals, and subjective check-ins—to identify potential sleep disruptors.
By analyzing changes around individual taVNS sessions and longer-term trends in heart rate, HRV, and sleep, it helps users understand their patterns and explore whether consistent use is associated with improvements over time, with personalized guidance on next steps.
The Luna Plus vagus nerve stimulator features a dedicated Sleep Mode with a 20-minute taVNS session designed for pre-bed use. Its approach combines research-informed stimulation parameters with respiratory-gated stimulation and physiological response monitoring, tracking changes in HR and HRV before, during, and after each session.
The technology draws on clinical research, including a 2024 randomized, sham-controlled trial by Zhang et al. that reported improvements in sleep quality and insomnia severity. While these findings provide a scientific basis for exploring taVNS in sleep care, further studies are needed to establish the efficacy of individual devices and stimulation protocols.
Building on this foundation, ZenoWell aims to advance personalized taVNS stimulation through AI, combining insights from clinical sleep datasets with individual physiological responses and user feedback to inform tailored stimulation parameters over time.
The ZenoWell app brings together wearable data, taVNS session logs, and AI-powered insights to help users explore sleep patterns and potential disruptors over time. ZenoWell A Connected Approach to Sleep CareFor sleep professionals, the integrated system offers a way to bring home-based routines, physiological trends, and user-reported experiences into follow-up discussions. It is intended as an adjunctive wellness tool, not a replacement for established care such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) or professional clinical judgment.
“ZenoWell has reached more than 100,000 users, many of whom are looking for support with sleep difficulties, and we have received positive feedback on our approach to sleep support,” said Dr. Jane, Founder & Chief Scientist at ZenoWell. “We believe sleep technology should go beyond measurement. By connecting physiological tracking, personalized insights, and a structured bedtime routine, we aim to help people better understand their sleep patterns and explore more individualized ways to support their well-being.”
ZenoWell will attend Sleep Europe 2026 in Maastricht, October 20–23, at Booth A75. Learn more about Luna Plus Set and its approach to sleep wellness at zenowell.ai.
Incubated at Heidelberg University Medical School, ZenoWell builds on the medical and research expertise of its parent company, BrainClos, which has developed closed-loop taVNS technology and contributed patents and research publications across areas including sleep, pain management, stroke rehabilitation, motor balance, and HRV. This research foundation supports ZenoWell’s development of non-invasive taVNS technology for autonomic nervous system regulation and personalized wellness. The company is also exploring more than 50 potential clinical and research collaborations.
Building on this foundation, ZenoWell offers the Luna Plus and Vita product lines, each designed for distinct user needs across sleep, stress recovery, pain management, metabolic health, focus, and mood regulation. Its products reach users through both wellness professional partnerships and direct-to-consumer channels.
