A-Plus Takes a Swipe at NPP Over Possible Appointment of Dennis Miracles Aboagye as EC Boss
The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he suggests could be a contradiction in the party’s position on political appointments at the Electoral Commission (EC).
A-Plus made the remarks in a post on his official Facebook page on Monday, October 19, 2026, following President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
In his post, A-Plus suggested that although members and supporters of the NPP might strongly criticise the current government over the appointment, they could take a different position if the party returns to power in the future.
He argued that the same people who are likely to make noise about the appointment could eventually support a similar decision if it benefits their party politically.
A-Plus further suggested that the NPP could appoint Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the party’s National Communications Director, as the head of the Electoral Commission if it regains power. According to the point he sought to make, those who criticise such appointments today could later find reasons to justify them when their own party is in government.
His comments have brought attention to the debate surrounding political appointments to important state institutions, particularly the Electoral Commission, which plays a crucial role in organising elections and protecting the credibility of Ghana’s democratic process.
The EC is expected to operate independently and maintain public confidence in its work. Consequently, appointments to leadership positions at the commission often attract public scrutiny, especially when political parties have differing views on the selection process.
A-Plus’s remarks appear to challenge the consistency of political parties when they move from opposition to government. His argument is that political principles should remain the same, regardless of which party holds power.
The comments also raise questions about whether political parties would maintain the same standards they demand from their opponents when they have the opportunity to make similar appointments themselves.
