Asantehene Throws Support Behind Mahama’s Reset Agenda Amid GoldBod Controversy

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has thrown his support behind President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda, describing the government’s drive to process Ghana’s mineral resources locally as a crucial step towards economic transformation.

He maintained that the policy, which seeks to shift the country from exporting raw minerals to domestic processing and value addition, remains important despite the controversies surrounding the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

Speaking on behalf of the Asantehene at the Mining in Motion Conference on Monday, October 19, Nana Okyere Kusi Ntrama, the Essumejahene, said the government’s approach to mineral governance could help Ghana overcome persistent economic challenges by retaining more wealth from its natural resources.

He explained that President Mahama’s reset agenda, introduced shortly after he assumed office, places greater emphasis on national control over mineral wealth and the development of local processing capacity as key drivers of economic growth.

According to him, the focus on transforming minerals within Ghana, rather than exporting them in their raw form, reflects a longstanding national ambition to use natural resources as a foundation for industrialisation.

Nana Okyere Kusi Ntrama linked the current policy direction to the vision of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who sought to harness the country’s mineral resources for national development and pursued plans to establish a gold refinery in Tarkwa.

He maintained that despite the concerns surrounding GoldBod, the broader objective of strengthening Ghana’s control over its mineral resources remains consistent with the country’s founding aspirations.
