The warning runs from 13:00 until 23:59, with heavy downpours, possible hail and excessive lightning threatening parts of the province.

SAWS expects widespread showers and thundershowers over southern KwaZulu-Natal during the afternoon.

A surface ridging high-pressure system and an upper-level trough could contribute to the development of severe thunderstorms.

The weather service warns that heavy downpours could flood settlements, roads and bridges and damage property and infrastructure.

Fast-flowing streams and deep water could also put lives at risk, while flooding may force affected communities to leave their homes.

Motorists could face poor driving conditions as heavy rain reduces visibility and water collects on roads.

SAWS has also maintained a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging interior winds over western and eastern KwaZulu-Natal and eastern parts of the Free State.

The warning remains in place until Tuesday morning, 20 October.

Strong winds could damage settlements and make driving difficult, particularly for motorists travelling in high-sided vehicles on exposed routes.

Residents should monitor weather updates and avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and fast-flowing streams.

Parents should check messages from their children’s schools and make arrangements for safe travel if weather conditions worsen.

Those collecting children from school during the afternoon should allow extra travelling time and avoid routes prone to flooding.

Residents should also secure loose outdoor items and stay indoors during severe thunderstorms where possible.
