La Leaders Warn Investors Against Developing Pleasure Beach Without Consent
Opinion leaders from the La community in Accra have threatened legal action against any investor who attempts to redevelop La Pleasure Beach without the community’s consent, intensifying a dispute over land ownership and the future of the beachfront.
The warning follows the demolition of structures at La Pleasure Beach Resort and other facilities along the La beachfront on October 2, 2026. The operation, supervised by personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces’ 48 Engineer Regiment with support from the Ghana Police Service, affected businesses and traders operating in the area.
Lawyer for the La community, Nsiah Akuetteh, said legal proceedings had already been initiated over what he described as an unlawful intrusion onto the land. Speaking at a press conference, he warned that any investor seeking to undertake development without resolving the community’s concerns could also face court action.
The community insists that its representatives must be consulted and an agreement reached before further steps are taken regarding the property. Its position is that development cannot proceed without addressing the land ownership claims and the interests of the people of La.
The dispute has placed the proposed redevelopment plans of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) under scrutiny. SSNIT has interests in Labadi Beach Hotel through Hotel Investments (Ghana) Limited, while the La Traditional Council maintains that it should have been involved before the demolition and any subsequent development decisions.
The Traditional Council has previously said the redevelopment plans were put on hold following discussions involving SSNIT, National Security and other stakeholders. The meeting reportedly resulted in apologies over the failure to engage the traditional authorities before the demolition, with a committee expected to examine the issues and consider proposals for the site.
Although the community has indicated that it is open to considering development proposals, its representatives insist that consultation and agreement must come before implementation. They have also raised concerns about the livelihoods of people whose businesses were affected by the demolition.
The incident has left several operators uncertain about the future of their investments and employment opportunities at the beachfront. Some affected business owners have appealed for assistance and compensation following the destruction of their structures.
With the community now threatening further legal action, the future of La Pleasure Beach remains tied to the unresolved questions surrounding ownership, consultation and the rights of affected stakeholders. Any lasting resolution will require the relevant parties to address those concerns through the appropriate legal and engagement processes.
