Rural Women Are Struggling’: Peter Obi Meets FCT Market Traders, Pledges Business Support

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with members of the Akpu Sellers Association at Sheda and Sheda Galadima markets in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), pledging support for rural women and their businesses.

Obi met the traders on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to mark the International Day of Rural Women and discuss the economic challenges affecting their livelihoods.

According to Obi, the women highlighted worsening economic hardship, declining customer patronage and inadequate water supply as some of the difficulties affecting their businesses.

They also appealed for access to microcredit to help them sustain their businesses, increase their income and improve their living conditions.

Obi said he assured the traders of his commitment to supporting rural women and other Nigerians facing economic difficulties.

He noted that rural women play important roles in food production, family support and the growth of local economies but continue to face challenges, including poverty, insecurity, limited access to credit and inadequate healthcare.

The former Anambra State governor stressed the need to empower rural women through targeted support and investment in their businesses.

He also called for increased investment in rural communities, saying women should have access to the resources and opportunities needed to improve their livelihoods, regardless of where they live.
