‘This Should Make Us All Ashamed’: Ankita Bhandari’s Parents Detained At India Gate, Dipke Hits Out

New Delhi: Cockroach Janata Party leader Abhijeet Dipke on Thursday criticised the Delhi Police after Ankita Bhandari’s parents were forcibly removed from India Gate during their protest demanding justice for their daughter. Sharing a video of the incident on X, Dipke questioned the treatment of the grieving parents and accused the government of treating its own citizens with cruelty.

“This should make us all ashamed! Ankita Bhandari’s parents don’t deserve such inhuman treatment. Why is the govt treating its own citizens with such cruelty?” Dipke wrote in his X post.

Ankita’s parents had been protesting at India Gate following the appointment of BJP leader Dushyant Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also visited the protest site to extend his support to the family.

According to reports, Delhi Police detained Ankita’s parents late at night and forcibly removed them from India Gate around 4 am. They were taken to Tilak Marg Police Station and were released a few hours later. The Congress said the parents had subsequently gone to stay at a relative’s house.

Following the detention, Ankita’s father issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government, demanding that Dushyant Gautam be removed from the post of Sikkim Governor. He warned that people across the country would take to the streets if the demand was not met within the deadline.

Ankita Bhandari, 19, worked as a receptionist at a resort near Rishikesh in Uttarakhand. She was reported murdered on September 18, 2022, and her body was recovered from the Cheela canal on September 24 that year.

Resort owner Pulkit Arya, son of former BJP leader Vinod Arya, and two resort managers, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta, were convicted in the case and sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court.

The Uttarakhand High Court has also rejected the bail pleas of all three convicts.
