At MMA Mania, Tim specializes in live, up-to-the-minute UFC event coverage, as well as provides an occasional fun sumo story.UFC Edmonton goes down this weekend (Sat., Oct. 17, 2026) inside Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This event is Canada vs. The World with all but one bout featuring a Canadian fighter (it would be all of them if not for a late replacement).

The main event is Joaquin Buckley vs. Mike Malott in the Welterweight division. Malott is looking to crash into the top ten in this one. Buckley is trying to get his first win since 2024.

The co-main event is Erin Blanchfield vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius in a bout that could determine the first challenger for Natalia Silva. The main card also has Kyle Nelson vs. Cristian Perez, Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Kyle Daukaus, Louis Jourdain vs. Timothy Cuamba and Mandel Nallo vs. Nate Landwehr. There should be some knockouts in there.

The ā€˜Prelims’ include Tanner Boser vs. Jhonata Diniz and Kaitlyn Cerminara vs. Mackenzie Stiller.

As always, there’s plenty to bet on this weekend. So let’s check out those odds below:

Buckley is coming off two terrible displays of takedown defense in losses to Sean Brady and Kamaru Usman. Between those fights he was somehow recruited by RAF to lose to Tyron Woodley and Patrick Downey. Before this losing streak he managed to retire Colby Convington with a doctor’s stoppage (see it here). He also flattened Stephen Thompson (see it here).

Malott has gone 4-0 since his TKO loss to Neil Magny (in a fight he was winning). His four wins have come over Trevin Giles, Charles Radtke, Kevin Holland and Gilbert Burns. The Burns fight ended in a TKO (see it here) and convinced the Brazilian it was time to hang up the gloves.

This is an interesting fight. Both men have some nice wins on their records, but the level of opposition leaves a little to be desired. So far Buckley has been exposed when he’s gone up against some elites. Malott is yet to get there and be tested, though.

I don’t consider Buckley among the elites, but he’s possibly the hardest hitter Malott has faced. Does any of that matter, though, if Buckley can’t stop a takedown?

Brady and Usman both took Buckley down four times each. That doesn’t sound like much. But you don’t need to do so many takedowns when you’re able to hold someone down for minutes at a time. Brady and Usman both enjoyed over 12 minutes of control time on Buckley. Brady did that in a three round fight. That’s pathetic, at this level.

Malott is the grappling coach at Team Alpha Male, so I expect he’s capable of doing something similar. If he’s smart, he’ll do exactly that.

Malott strikes me as someone who does have good fight IQ. I do wonder, though, if he’ll take some risks on the feet out of an obligation to put on a show in Canada. He’s got good hands, so I can see him thinking he can beat Buckley standing. But I think there’s a chance he gets caught if he tries that. Buckley is longer and has a lot of explosiveness (if you let him stand around and launch attacks at you).

Malott has to recognize that a win over a top ten opponent is more important than pleasing the crowd. I think he’s going to do the smart thing here and we’ll see Buckley do an upside down turtle impression for the third fight in a row.

UFC Edmonton this weekend and Mike Malott vs. Joaquin Buckley. Who wins and how?

Rec 3CommentsThin Stroke Comment Icon BubbleReplyRead 12 repliesErin Blanchfield could secure a title shot at UFC Edmonton. Chris Unger/Zuffa LLCErin Blanchfield (-310) vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius (+250)Blanchfield probably felt a little left out when Natalia Silva fought Wang Cong for the vacant Flyweight title. She’s coming off wins over Tracy Cortez and Rose Namajunas. Those wins bookend the no-show she experienced from Maycee Barber in May, 2025. Blanchfield is now 8-1 with her only loss being a decision to Manon Fiorot. She should get a title shot if she wins on Saturday.

Jasudavicius beat Karine Silva in April. Before that she suffered a first round TKO against Fiorot. She complained about the stoppage there, but I think it was a fair one. The Fiorot loss spoiled her five fight winning streak which included finishes over Jessica Andrade, Ariane Lipski and Priscila Cachoeira. She also beat Fatima Kline, who currently looks like a title challenger at Strawweight.

I’m trying to find a reason to pick Jasudavicius, but I can’t come up with it. Blanchfield’s game isn’t very sexy, but it’s very effective. There are few in her division who can smother othegr fighters like she can. Jasudavicius is very big for the division, but Blanchfield’s grappling, for me, outweighs that fact.

Jasudavicius is a good grappler, too, and she has some nice hands. But I don’t think she does anything better than Blanchfield does, other than go for the kill and score finishes from top position. I don’t think she’s going to be getting on top of Blanchfield in this fight. Blanchfield leads her division with 0.8% bottom time percentage. That’s second only to Tom Aspinall in the entire UFC.

With Blanchfield’s odds the way they are, I’ll take her minus the spread. I think she can get a dominant decision and there’s a chance she might get a submission, too.

Which fight are you most looking forward to at UFC Edmonton?

Rec 3CommentsThin Stroke Comment Icon BubbleReplyRead 6 repliesKyle Nelson could deliver some fireworks at UFC Edmonton. Jordan Jones/Getty ImagesKyle Nelson (+245) vs. Cristian Perez (-305)Nelson fell victim to Terrance McKinney’s quick start in March, losing in 24 seconds after getting kicked in the dome (see it here). Before that he won a weird fight over Matt Frevola (where his TKO win was waved off and then had to fight to a decision). Before that he was pieced apart by Steve Garcia (see it here).

Perez won on Contender Series in August. He had a long career in Combate, joining the promotion as a teenager and going 13-1. He did have a loss on Contender Series in 2025. However, that was to the impressive looking Manoel Sousa.

Nelson seems to have gotten too comfortable fighting wars in there, even if he comes off on the worst end of them. He just seems to get to a point where he bites down on the mouthpiece and starts to swing hoping to get things over one way or another.

Perez looks like a dangerous striker so, as the odds suggest, this approach might not be a good idea for the Canadian.

Nelson getting hit by 4.58 sig. strikes a minute makes it hard to pick him, especially with his fighting style being so chaotic. The round total is low here at 1.5, but I think this probably finishes early.

Barriault owns a 6-10 1 NC UFC record. His exciting style means he’s rarely in danger of getting chopped by UFC, though. The Quebecois fighter is coming off two straight Fight of the Night bonus earning performances. However, both of those were decision losses — to Michal Oleksiejczuk and Shara Magomedov. Before that he got a Performance of the Night bonus for a KO over Bruno Silva, which — at the time — looked like it might have been the first ever fatality in a UFC fight (see it here).

Daukaus came back to UFC last summer with a first round stoppage over Michel Pereira. He followed that up with a first round submission over Gerald Meerschaert (see it here). That submission punched his ticket to the White House, where he was finished by Bo Nickal in the first round (see it here).

I’m not that sold on the rebirth of Daukaus in UFC. I think he has a grappling edge over Barriault, but I don’t think his durability is good enough to last a long time with Power Bar. I think Barriault’s striking might get to him early and force a stoppage.

Daukaus’ defense against sig. strikes is only 42 percent. And Barriault lands almost one of those ever ten seconds (5.65 per minute).

Jourdain, brother of Charles Jourdain, won on Contender Series in September, 2025, but has to wait over a year for his proper debut. Prior to Contender Series he fought around Canada in both MMA and boxing.

Cuamba is 2-3 in UFC after coming off Contender Series in 2023. Last time out he was submitted by Bernardo Sopaj. Prior that he had back-to-back wins over Chang Ho Lee and Roberto Romero. The Romero win came from a flying knee (see it here).

Cuamba has shown some bright spots in his fighting over this run, despite the losses. That’s more impressive to me than Jourdain’s Contender Series win. I also like that Cuamba has been active while Jourdain has been sitting out on the sidelines. I feel like Cuamba is one of those guys who is going to get better the more reps he gets, even if he’s losing every now and then. I’ll pick him here. I think he’s more well-rounded, in addition to thinking he’s fighting under the better circumstances.

Nallo was TKO’d by Jai Herbert in April. That was his first fight since coming off Contender Series with a first round stoppage win. Nallo had a long career in Bellator, going 4-3 1 NC. He didn’t fight any of the bigger names in that promotion, though.

Landwehr drew the short straw of being Cub Swanson’s retirement fight opponent in April. Swanson came out the gates hot in that fight and blew Landwehr away in four minutes (see it here). That was Landwehr’s third loss in a row after getting stopped by Morgan Charriere and Doo Ho Choi. He’s now 5-6 in UFC.

I really want to see Landwehr break his losing skid here. Sorry if that makes me a bad Canadian. I’m feeling a little gun shy, though, given Nallo’s size and reach advantage. Nallo also lands at a high rate and that’s been a bit of an Achilles’ Heel for Landwehr, who seems to freeze when he’s getting bombed on.

I’m expecting a finish in this bout, but I think there’s value in the over. This could go deep into a second round before someone goes down.

Boser was brought back to UFC for their April show in Winnipeg. It didn’t go very well for the Albertan, though. He was finished in the second round by Gokhan Saricam (see it here). That was his first UFC appearance since 2023. He went 5-5 in his first go-around with the company.

Diniz was put away by Mario Pinto in his last fight. The former GLORY fighter, and sparring partner of Alex Pereira, is now 3-2 in UFC. His wins are uninspiring decisions over Alvin Hines and Karl Wiliams and a left hook over the chinny Austen Lane (see it here). His other loss was a beatdown he suffered from Marcin Tybura.

I’m not high on Diniz at all. But Boser is going to give him the kind of fight he wants. These two are going to stand and bang and I think Boser is too slow and shopworn to be able to hang with Diniz. Given how inconsistent Diniz has been, I wouldn’t be totally surprised if there’s an upset, though.

LeBlanc debuted on the last show in Canada, losing to Robert Valentin by first round submission. That was his UFC debut, having gone 10-2 on mostly the regional circuit in Canada. His two prior losses are to UFC vet Damien Lapilus and Joel Bauman during his only fight in LFA (the best org he’d fought in prior to joining UFC).

Galanti scored a 35-second KO on Contender Series in August. Before that he was a champion in Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

LeBlanc is only here to fill out the Canadian quota of the card. I don’t think he’s UFC level and what Galanti has done on Contender Series and CFFC is enough to convince me that LeBlanc is getting stopped again.

These are two totally unknown Heavyweights for UFC watchers.

Mahjoub is the local talent. He’s from Calgary, but trains at Montreal’s famous Tristar Academy. He’s 5-0 to start his career. He’s also been active in the pro grappling circuit in Montreal. He’s 36 years old.

Faglier is over a decade younger than Mahjoub. He went 3-0 in Fury Fighting Championships and is 6-0 overall. His last fight was a decision over Cody East in February (yes it seems some places are still booking him). Faglier had a successful amateur career before going pro, where he went 7-0 and won some titles.

Lots of reasons to stay away from this one. Heavyweights are hard to predict even when you’ve seen them fight a dozen times in UFC. In this situation, I’ll go with Faglier, since he’s got the KOs on his record. Mahjoub doesn’t have many of those and you won’t go far in this division if you can’t turn someone’s lights off in the first round.

Cerminara (formerly Chookagian) hasn’t fought since she lost a decision to Maycee Barber in 2024. Before that her previous fight was a 2022 decision loss to Manon Fiorot. She’s 11-6 in UFC and is most notable for unsuccessfully challenging Valentina Shevchenko for the belt in 2020. She was supposed to fight Jamey-Lyn Horth at this event.

Stiller has been drafted out of the recent TUF series to fill this spot. She lost to Delphine Benouaich on the show. Benouaich has looked pretty good since then, though. Stiller was 3-0 in LFA with all submissions before entering the TUF house. She is going up a weight-class for this fight.

Strawweights rarely do well when they go up to Flyweight, see what happened to Fatima Kline against Jasmine Jasudavius. Many Strawweights in UFC are fighting at that weight because there’s not anything smaller (like Atomweight in ONE and Invicta). Stiller is doing the UFC a solid here and I think she’ll find it too hard to counter the size difference.

Stiller’s strength is also grappling. Cerminara is not flashy with her BJJ, but I think she knows more than enough to not get subbed by a rookie.

Anheliger hasn’t fought in two years. His last appearance was a unanimous decision loss to Cody Gibson (who towards over him in that fight). Before that he beat Charalampos Grigoriou. He’s now 2-3 in UFC and about to turn 40.

Koslow has been away even longer. He hasn’t fought since his UFC debut in December 2022 where he was TKO’d by Cameron Saaiman. The 29 year old fell to 6-1 due to that.

Anheliger is kind of caught between weightclasses. He’s up against another Bantamweight who is bigger, longer and possibly stronger than him. The ten year age gap is also significant. I don’t like the four year absence for Koslow, but it doesn’t look so bad when Anheliger has been out for two years.

Croden is 2-1 in UFC since signing over from LFA in 2024. Her wins are over Darya Zheleznyakova and Tainara Lisboa (by TKO). Her loss was to Luana Santos. She’s a former LFA champion.

Chandler is 3-3 in UFC. She is coming off an armbar win over Priscila Cachoeira in June. Before that she was finished by Joselyne Edwards.

I’m very high on Croden. She’s aggressive and very sharp with her combination striking. Chandler was getting rocked by Cachoeira before storming back and pulling off the armbar. Croden’s offense will be just as potent as Cachoeira’s but she won’t have the same defensive holes.

Chovancek has one of the more interesting nicknames around. ā€˜The Best Fisherman in MMA’ is 9-0 as a pro and hails from Petrolia, Ontario. He earned a contract on Contender Series over a year ago, but had been on the sidelines ever since then.

You is a Road to UFC product. He won one of those tournaments in 2024. He won his first two UFC bouts after that, including a decision over Xiao Long. In March he was submitted by Elijah Smith (see that here).

Chovancek will have a size advantage over You. However, I’ve got to go with the guy who has made more reps in UFC and has actually won here. You has good wrestling and it’s unlikely Chovancek has seen anything similar to that on the regional scene he’s been apart of.

Here’s a couple of long shots for Saturday night’s action …

I think Malott is going to get Joaquin Buckley down and hold him down for a long time, just like Sean Brady and Kamaru Usman did. I also think Malott is more proactive with his ground-and-pound, too. So I think he might be able to get Buckley trapped and just tap away for a TKO win.

Sadly, Canada does not have a deep pool of MMA talent right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if Canada takes a L, overall on Saturday. Landwehr and Cuamba are two underdogs who I think have a great shot. Both are going against pretty unproven talents in the form of Mandel Nallo and Louis Jourdain.

I think this fight is destined for a stoppage. The first minute finish is +1000 for this fight (instead of its usual +2000), so I’ll go for a buzzer-beater instead.
