I Can Describe Akufo-Addo As One Of The Worst Presidents In NPP – Boakye Agyarko Drops Bombshell

Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko has described Nana Akufo-Addo’s presidency as a wasted opportunity, arguing that the former president failed to meet expectations and left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) facing significant challenges.

In an interview on Asempa FM, Agyarko said Akufo-Addo came to power with considerable public goodwill and promised to tackle corruption, safeguard public resources, and transform Ghana through the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda.

However, he argued that the administration’s record was overshadowed by economic difficulties, divisions within the NPP, and the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections. He also claimed that Akufo-Addo’s leadership weakened the party’s structures and damaged its public image.

Agyarko further alleged that corruption increased under the former president, illegal mining harmed water bodies, and economic conditions deteriorated. He also criticised Akufo-Addo for allegedly disregarding sound advice and giving excessive influence to family members and close associates.

Turning to his own political ambitions, Agyarko revealed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor had urged him for about seven years to contest for the NPP national chairmanship.

He said Kufuor believes he can help restore the party’s core values, promote unity, and rebuild its structures after the electoral setback. Agyarko explained that the former president’s repeated encouragement played a significant role in his decision to seek the position.

Agyarko pledged that, if elected, he would promote accountability, enforce party discipline, and bring together rival factions. He emphasised that the NPP must confront its internal divisions and avoid repeating the mistakes he believes contributed to its defeat.

His comments have divided opinion among NPP supporters. Some share his criticism of Akufo-Addo’s legacy, while others point to achievements such as Free Senior High School and Agenda 111 as reasons to recognise the former president’s administration.

The discussion has highlighted differing views about the causes of the party’s electoral loss and the leadership required to rebuild it. Agyarko insists that the NPP must embrace transparency, unity, and responsible leadership to regain public trust.
