Ghana Water Ltd. Admits Major Supply Gap, Producing 220 Million of Required 350 Million Gallons
According to a report by GHOne TV on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Ghana Water Limited is producing far less water than the country needs. The Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, acknowledged the shortfall.
“We produce 220 million gallons of water out of the required 350 million, so there’s a huge gap,” he said.
The figures mean the company is meeting only about 63 percent of national demand. The remaining 130 million gallons, roughly 37 percent, goes unmet. Many households, businesses and institutions are therefore left to cope with irregular supply or none at all.
Mr. Mutawakilu’s candid admission comes at a time when residents in several communities have complained about prolonged dry taps, forcing many to rely on water tankers, boreholes and other costly alternatives. For many families, the burden of securing water has become a daily struggle.
Observers say the gap reflects deeper challenges facing the sector. These include rapid population growth, expanding urbanisation, ageing infrastructure, high levels of non-revenue water caused by leakages and illegal connections, and pollution of raw water sources, which raises treatment costs and disrupts production.
Closing the gap will likely require substantial investment in new treatment plants, rehabilitation of old distribution networks and stronger protection of water bodies. Stakeholders have also urged the adoption of efficient water management technologies and public education on conservation.
The Managing Director’s remarks may add to calls for urgent government and private sector collaboration to boost production capacity. Reliable access to potable water is essential to public health, economic productivity and quality of life.
As demand continues to rise, the company’s ability to expand output will be a key test of how well Ghana can secure water for its growing population. Consumers are meanwhile encouraged to use water responsibly and report leakages promptly to help ease the pressure on the system.
