Speaking at an engagement on the Auditor-General’s Report attended by regional ministers and metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs), Dr Forson stressed the need for strict accountability.
Public money does not belong to government officials; we are only the custodians of those resources. Those resources belong to the people of Ghana: our constituents, our citizens, he said.
He called on the officials to recover every recoverable cedi and account for every amount entrusted to them.
So let us recover every cedi that is recoverable! Let us account for every cedi that is entrusted to us as public officials, the minister stated.
Dr Forson emphasised that accountability should go beyond recovering lost or misappropriated funds after the fact. He urged the development of stronger systems that prevent financial irregularities in the first place, so that recovery exercises do not become an annual ritual.
The meeting focused on findings from the Auditor-General’s Report and the responsibility of local and regional officials in safeguarding public resources. The Finance Minister charged the MMDCEs and regional ministers to treat public funds with the seriousness they deserve and to put citizens’ interests first.
His remarks form part of ongoing government efforts to improve public financial management and reduce instances of financial mismanagement highlighted in successive audit reports.
The call for greater stewardship of public resources comes as the administration continues to stress transparency and responsible use of state funds at all levels of government.
