Waymo Drives Into Oncoming Traffic in Tampa as Passengers Panic: ‘Thought We Were Done for a Second’

WaymoA Waymo Robotaxi took a group of college students on a wild ride in Florida last week.

"Waymo went rogue in Tampa, FL," TikTok user Matt Reardon wrote over a video he posted of the incident from inside the car, which he captioned, "thought we were done for a second there."

In the video, the young men giggled and yelled "oh my god" and "what the [expletive]" as the car steered into oncoming traffic on the right side of the road, which had been redirected at the time following the October 4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers game nearby, per WFLA. The Waymo seemingly didn't realize that the other cars were following a detour.

"Must be a European model," quipped one commenter, while another added, "The Waymo is like, I ain't doing nothing wrong they are."

"Guys, like, I'm outta here!" said one person in another video sent to WFLA, which reported that the students abandoned the vehicle.

"Your driver sucks!" someone in the second video shouted at the car after they got out, per the outlet

The end of the first video showed the Waymo stuck in place, blocking the lane.

"Wanted an adventure," Reardon added in the comments, to which another user responded, "well, you definitely got one."

In response to the incident, Waymo issued a statement to WFLA. "The trust and safety of the communities we operate in is of paramount importance," a spokesperson told the outlet. "In Tampa this week, a Waymo vehicle briefly entered a temporary one-way street before correcting the issue. We are looking into this event so we can learn more and improve."
