A California couple have been charged with felony child neglect after their daughter died of an asthma attack in their home infested with cockroaches, mold, and pet feces.

Gabrielle Hanson, 32, and Jacob Randolph, 39, were arrested after their eight-year-old daughter Aurora Williams passed away from complications caused by an asthma attack that went unaddressed for more than eight hours, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney (SCCDA).

On May 13, 2026, San Jose Police Department responded to a medical emergency involving a child at the family’s home on Lancelot Lane, the SCCDA said.

The house was strewn with garbage and pet feces, as well as infested with cockroaches. Detectives found that the girl’s inhaler was broken and her respiratory mask contained cockroaches as well.

‘This little asthmatic girl was living in a home with feces…. Aurora was kept out of school and teachers said she was less than 1% body weight and had roaches on her,’ District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a news release.

Six children aged two months to 17 years old were taken into custody by Department of Family and Children Services.

The children had been living in dangerous and unsanitary conditions since 2019, according to county social workers’ records, the SCCDA said.

Aurora Williams was pronounced dead four days later. Her cause of death was determined to be a lack of oxygen to the brain due to severe asthma with acute lung injury as a result of human rhinovirus/enterovirus, the SCCDA said.

The girl’s death was categorized as homicide.

In February 2025, Williams was brought to the emergency room for asthma and difficulty breathing. During the visit, hospital staff saw a bug fall from the girl’s shoe and a cockroach crawling on her.

‘Oh yeah, bugs just crawl on me,’ Williams told the staff, according to the SCCDA.

‘She was also reported to smell like cat urine, appeared seriously underweight and pale, and stated she was hungry and had not eaten,’ the SCCDA wrote.

‘When she was finally brought to a hospital, staff found that she was below 1% of her expected body weight and had roaches on her emaciated body,’ Rosen said.

In the same hearing, Hanson’s brother Jonathan Hanson, 44, was charged with two counts of child molestation and one count of child pornography possession.

Jonathan Hanson had been living with the family and sexually abusing Gabrielle’s stepdaughter, the SCCDA wrote.

The mother was aware of the abuse and did nothing to stop it, according to the SCCDA.

Both parents were released but were put under protective orders which prohibit them from having any contact with their children, as well as any other minors, KRON4 reported.

Gabrielle Hanson, Jonathan Hanson, and Jacob Randolph are scheduled to appear in court on November 20 where their conviction and sentencing will be determined.
